Did you know…the formula for nail polish was originally a converted version of paint enamel used on cars?! Luckily, nail polish formulas have evolved to be more safe for consumer use.
Nail polish has evolved to a new standard! Recently, we’ve seen formulas claiming 3-free, 4-free, and more recently 5-free.
So what does all this mean?
Formula is free of Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Toluene, and Formaldehyde.
Formula is free of Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Toluene, Formaldehyde and Formaldehyde Resin.
Formula is free of Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Toluene, Formaldehyde, Formaldehyde Resin, and Camphor.
Some of these ingredients are pretty common in consumer products. For instance, Formaldehyde resin is normally used as a nail strengthener. Even though this ingredient is not considered extremely harmful or toxic, it is a skin allergen that can cause irritation for up to 3 days after your nail polish has already dried.
Another example is the use of Camphor, a natural ingredient commonly found in aromatherapy products. Although it is considered natural, it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s safe to use. Studies have shown that inhaling Camphor can be toxic! It causes irritation and is linked to chronic headaches, dizziness, and nausea.
Luckily, brands seem to be moving in the right direction to try and rid their products of these unhealthy ingredients, making the products we love and buy every day cleaner, and safer to use.
